Laboratory for the Interdisciplinary Study of Time

What do we do at LITERA?

At LITERA, we aim, through the use of tools from chronobiology, cognitive sciences, social sciences, and data science, to generate knowledge about the temporal phenomena that govern our lives and their biological and sociocultural implications, with particular interest in their application to public health, education, and other evidence-based public policies.

Our Projects

Learn about the laboratory’s lines of research, aimed at addressing our main scientific questions.

Polysomnography Laboratory

The LITERA and CNC Sleep Laboratory is dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of human sleep, with a focus on the relationship between the neurophysiological processes of sleep and behavioral variables.

Laboratorio Litera

The LITERA and CNC Sleep Laboratory is dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of human sleep, with a focus on the relationship between the neurophysiological processes of sleep and behavioral variables. We have a sleep room equipped with a BWIII PSG Plus polysomnograph (Neurovirtual), which allows the simultaneous recording of electroencephalographic, electrooculographic, electromyographic, respiratory, and cardiovascular signals.
The facility is specially designed for conducting sleep studies under controlled conditions, enabling the study of different sleep stages and the main physiological events associated with sleep.

Objectives:

  • To characterize sleep architecture and its variability as a function of individual, behavioral, and environmental factors.
  • To integrate the study of sleep with cognitive and behavioral processes, using experimental and observational designs.
  • To explore the impact of behavioral and environmental factors—such as screen use and digital technologies—on human sleep.
  • To promote the generation and transfer of knowledge about sleep, with potential impact in academic, clinical, and social domains.

The laboratory was established with the support of the Universidad de San Andrés.

Research Techniques

Actimetric activity measurements

We use monitoring devices known as actimeters, which non-invasively collect and record motor activity data, allowing us to measure sleep–wake or activity–rest cycles.

Sleep surveys

We administer questionnaires that allow us to access self-reported information on different aspects related to sleep, such as habits and sleep quality.

Observational studies

We collect information on the occurrence of phenomena in natural settings and outside the laboratory, in order to establish relationships and associations between variables in real-world environments.

Cognitive experiments

Through experimental designs, we assess how sleep quality and quantity can affect cognitive abilities, ranging from attention to opinion formation and consensus-building.

Data visualization

We seek to represent and analyze our data in an effective and innovative way, as we know it plays a crucial role in detecting emerging patterns.
