Abstract Long before the word circadian was coined, before science uncovered the suprchiasmatic nucleus or described melatonin’s nocturnal surge, Jules Verne was already imagining what happens when human beings live outside of Earth’s temporal bounds. Let’s remember that Jules Gabriel Verne (1828-1905) was a very popular French writer, sometimes considered as the father of science fiction. While he did not travel around the world (he only left France for Britain, Scandinavia, and a short tour of the United States), his imagination sent him to the moon, to the center of the Earth and to the bottom of the sea, among many other literary inventions. In his extraordinary body of work—some 60 novels published under the banner of Voyages extraordinaires—Verne returned again and again to the problem of time: not just historical or cosmic time, but daily time, the rhythms of waking and sleeping, light and dark, activity and rest. What we now call chronobiology—the science of biological rhythms—was, in Verne’s hands, a narrative device, a source of tension and wonder.
