Spanish Language Courses

All students take one Spanish Language Course, either at the Intermediate or at the Advanced level. Your placement level will be determined by an oral and written exam after your arrival at Buenos Aires. Both classes, taught by local professors, are intended to improve your skills in the Spanish language in addition to providing you with an understanding of the most relevant aspects of contemporary Argentinean society.

1) Intermediate Spanish

"Contemporary Argentina through Popular Culture, Literature and Film, I"

This course takes advantage of the program's cultural and linguistic immersion, providing a systematic grammar review and preparing the student for advanced courses in Spanish. The course develops speaking, listening, reading and writing skills by providing instruction in a dynamic and inspiring cultural context. T hrough the study of a diverse array of materials from scholarly and news articles, to literary texts, films, essays, popular music, photography, painting and installations, students learn to use Spanish in increasingly complex ways, in class as well as in real life. The course also uses the city Buenos Aires and its cultural life to explore these topics. Some planned activities include trips to museums and culturally relevant cityscapes in order to better understand some of the social and political transformations of contemporary Argentina.

2) Advanced Spanish

"Contemporary Argentina through Popular Culture, Literature and Film, II"

This advanced Spanish course develops accurate and idiomatic oral and written expression in a cultural context. With a constant review of the Spanish syntax and grammar, students learn to write different types of texts (argumentative, expositive, creative, etc) in specific topics. Students achieve a higher level of syntactical and lexical competence through the study of a diverse array of materials from scholarly and news articles, to literary texts, films, essays, popular music, photography, painting and installations. It also uses the city Buenos Aires and its cultural life to explore these topics. Some planned activities include trips to museums and culturally relevant cityscapes in order to better understand some of the social and political transformations of contemporary Argentina.
